SA MASTERS HOCKEY IPT 2022

Proudly hosted by WP Masters Hockey Association

The WP Masters Hockey Association is thrilled to finally be welcoming our IPT participants to the ‘Mother City’ later this week! We certainly have waited long enough for this one….

Bags are being packed and final travel plans confirmed. So, it is the perfect time to remind you of the Stick to Basics’ campaign that we are launching this year and which we highlighted in our last newsletter to you.

Our WP teams have all selected their preferred local charities and grass roots projects to get behind at IPT 2022, and we are challenging each of you to now join us in a show of solidarity and support of these very worthy causes.

Below, you will find the list of nominated social responsibility projects, along with a brief description of their work and how you can assist in these efforts. ALL teams participating in the IPT have been assigned one of these causes, generally based on the WP team playing in your pool and the cause that they have elected to support.

Please refer to the list below to see exactly how your team can assist over the IPT weekend.

Sides are encouraged to hand over their donated goods that they have brought with them to the IPT on completion of their game against the WP team playing in their pool – a post-game “ice breaker” between the two sides.

Alternatively, for those playing in pools where no WP teams are present, there will also be an opportunity to simply deposit their donated goods at a designated collection point at WPCC over the weekend.

The long-term objective of the ‘Stick to Basics’ initiative is to challenge all future tournament hosts to adopt this social responsibility blueprint and roll it out for the benefit of organizations located in their specific regions. It represents an opportunity for all participants to make a real difference in less fortunate communities and leave a lasting legacy throughout the country, year-on-year.

‘Stick to Basics’ nominated social responsibility causes – IPT 2022:

LADIES SECTION:

1.The WP Foals, WP Lipizzaners and WP Mustang Sally’s are all challenging the following teams to join them in support of the work of The Sporting Chance Foundation:

  • KZN Idube
  • SG Sables
  • Northern Fillies
  • Zimbabwe Ladies
  • EP Angels
  • Border Gazelles
  • SG Nyalas
  • Mpumalanga Eagles

The Sporting Chance Foundation’s prime objective is to provide opportunities for sporting achievement for as many children as possible – irrespective of race, gender, or social class – by offering professional coaching within all community sectors.

In collaboration with SAMHA, the WP Masters Hockey Association will be hosting a 90-minute hockey development clinic for a group of 80 girls and boys (aged 9-15yrs) from one of Cape Town’s nearby informal settlements (Langa). We have tasked Sporting Chance with coordinating this initiative at WPCC on Saturday 30th April from midday.

We will be facilitating the safe collection and drop-off of all the children in hired buses. The young participants will also receive a T-shirt, and refreshments for the afternoon. Importantly, they will be exposed to some top-level coaching during the clinic. Our intention is to involve select Masters players, coaches and umpires to assist in the clinic, obviously pending their IPT fixtures schedule prior to, and after, the clinic time.

Call to action required from your side: All teams listed above are urged to bring with them to IPT any preloved or new sports equipment that they are prepared to donate. Balls (any sport), sticks, team playing kit (skorts, shirts, socks, boots, trainers etc), bags, training bibs, cones, or any other sporting equipment that they are prepared to part with.

“Drop off “of this equipment can take place either (a) at the clinic on Saturday; (b) with any of the 3 Ladies teams supporting Sporting Chance during the course of the tournament; or (c) at the designated drop-off point at WPCC at any stage over the weekend.

2.The WP Thoroughbreds have adopted the DP Marais Hospital to support at IPT 2022. DP Marais Hospital is a specialist 200 bed TB/HIV hospital in Retreat offering much needed inpatient treatment for these highly prevalent diseases. The hospital’s patients are generally admitted for extended periods of treatment (average stay of 2 months) until they are clinically well enough to continue outpatient treatment in the community. The patients come from very poor communities and generally arrive at the hospital with only the clothes they are wearing – there is a huge need for clothing for them to wear during their extended hospital stay.

The WP Thoroughbreds are challenging the following sides to join forces with them in their cause related efforts at IPT 2022:

  • Mpumalanga Vets
  • EP Rangers
  • SG Shafters
  • Northerns Citi
  • KZN Amakhehla

  • Eastern Gauteng Steeds
  • Northerns FOF
  • North West Nomads

Call to action required from your side: The WP Thoroughbreds team have been busy collecting any items of clothing to donate towards DP Marais Hospital. They are challenging the teams listed above to bring with them to IPT any old clothing that no longer fits or hasn’t seen use in years (children’s, men’s and ladies clothing as well as shoes). Any items whatsoever will be very gratefully received. Time to clean up the clothing cupboards and help others less fortunate! Clothing donations can be handed over to the WP Thoroughbreds following your pool game against them, or alternatively at the designated drop off area at WPCC over the course of the weekend.

4.The WP Studs and WP Chargers have joined forces for maximum impact in their support of Bridgehouse NPC at IPT 2022. Bridgehouse is a Non-profit Organisation based in nearby Athlone. It seeks to educate, motivate, equip and empower children and the community suffering from severe poverty, drug abuse, gangsterism, alcoholism and child abuse.

Call to action required from your side: The WP Studs and WP Chargers will be collecting Sanitary Pads and Stationery items for schoolgirl beneficiaries of this project. These girls miss a week of schooling on average every month as they cannot afford sanitary products. We are challenging all of the men’s sides listed above to bring with them to IPT as many sanitary pads and stationery items as they are able to donate. We are appealing to your compassionate and caring nature to assist with such basic contributions that many of us privileged folk would take for granted on a daily basis. Your donations will mean so much to these young kids from impoverished areas, and truly make such a positive difference in their lives!

Your donations can be handed over to the WP Chargers or the WP Studs following your pool game against them, or alternatively at the designated drop off area at WPCC over the course of the weekend.
