And just like that, we approach 150 days into the Lockdown…. We trust you are all well and that you and your loved ones are healthy. Our heartfelt condolences to all who have suffered bereavement during this time. The hockey community has not been spared in this pandemic and our thoughts go out to those who have lost loved ones.
The President’s announcement that sport will be re-opened under Alert level 2 has brought welcome relief and has provided light at the end of the tunnel as we near the last quarter of 2020. We now await the publication of the return to competition directives from the Sports Ministry, which will provide guidelines as to the way this is to be achieved. On receipt of the directives, SAHA will amend the existing operational guidelines to facilitate a return to competition. The SA Masters Executive is working very closely with SAHA to ensure that we are able to return to training and competition in a responsible and controlled manner.
SA MASTERS HOCKEY IPT 2020
We refer to our earlier communique announcing the postponement of the SA Masters IPT due to the uncertainty created by the spread of the COVID – 19 virus in which we identified 5-8 November 2020 as the date for the tournament. After reviewing all the variables and potential factors outside of our direct control, the SA Masters Executive in consultation with the Western Province Masters Association has made the very difficult decision to postpone the 2020 SA Masters IPT to 23-27 April 2021 in Cape Town. We have always stated that we postponed the IPT from its original dates to allow the greatest latitude in decision-making and we had hoped to have greater certainty at this stage. We remain of the view that there are too many variables for us to confidently guarantee a successful and safe IPT at this stage. The potential re-introduction of lock down regulations involving inter-provincial travel, accommodation, closure of sport venues and the current limitation on the number of people at a sports venue at a single time also makes a tournament with approximately 1300 participants very difficult as this stage.
We aim to start the first matches on Saturday, 24 April 2021. The finals are planned for Monday, 26 April 2021 late afternoon with the Tuesday, 27 April 2021 (public holiday) earmarked as a travel day.
We shall be re-opening the team registration process on 15 September 2020 until 15 October 2020, after which individual registrations will commence on 16 October 2020 until 1 December 2020. The age eligibility cut-off date will now become 31 December 2021. Please be on the look out for further communication in this regard.
